I began my journey on July 2nd at the starting point of Route 66 in Downtown Chicago, which is located at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Adams Street in front of the Art Institute of Chicago. Even though Route 66 actually begins in Chicago, there are only a few signs marking its historic nature there, and you do not actually drive on Route 66 until you get out of the city. That's because the Interstate system bypassed many sections of Route 66 starting in the 1950s and eventually replaced large portions of it.
