I had the privilege of visiting the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site in Collinsville, Illinois...that's where the remains of the largest prehistoric Indian city north of Mexico are located. At first glance, the mounds look like grassy hills, but they are actually Indian burial grounds. Monks Mound is the largest one and was built in a series of stages from about 1000-1200 A.D. Visitors can climb the steps 100-feet to the top of Monks Mound and get a view of the entire area, including the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. If I had more time, I would have liked to hike some of the trails on the 2,200 acre site, which means I will just have to come back another time to take in the rest of what this wonderful place has to offer.
