What better way to end the 4th of July along Route 66 than to stay at one of the historic motels there. The Route 66 Rail Haven Motel opened in 1938 and is still in operation today as a Best Western. The front desk worker said there are plans to have the old Rail Haven Motel sign restored and placed back on the grounds. The old Best Western sign with the gold and red crown was placed between two of the buildings at the back of the motel. By day, the place looks like a quaint motel with a couple of powder blue 1950s era cars in front and two original gas pumps in the driveway to give a throwback feel to the Route 66 days...and by night, the motel is lit up with green neon lights, with an electronic sign out front touting its claim to fame in red lettering that Elvis stayed there in 1956. Hunka! Hunka!
