I drove into Dwight, Illinois and felt like I had stepped back in time. Just a short distance away from the buzz of Interstate 55 traffic, there is an old Texaco station that has been restored and turned into a Welcome Center. It still has the old red gas pumps and Route 66 signs tacked onto the building. According to my Route 66 guidebook, the Dwight Texaco station opened in 1933 and closed its doors in 1999 after -- yes -- 66 years! If only gas prices were 10 cents per gallon like they were in 1933, or even $1.09 a gallon like they were in 1999. Then I'd have a lot more money to buy hot dogs! ;-)
